This study aims to examine the aesthetics of windows in modern Finnish architecture as devices that mediate between humans and nature, particularly focusing on the residential architecture designed by Eliel Saarinen (1873-1950) and Alvar Aalto (1898-1976). Previous studies have emphasized architectural design, along with architects' views of nature and the role of architecture in national history. In this study, by positioning windows as a key element where the residents' views of nature and housing are particularly reflected, it re-evaluates the works of modern Finnish architects. Windows are not merely an opening; it is a symbolic boundary that connects the interior and exterior by allowing light, sightlines, and presence to interface, while simultaneously articulating the two realms. In a harsh natural environment, Finnish architects have devised innovative designs for windows and their surroundings, both to let in the light essential for daily life and to shut out snow, wind, and cold air. It can be said that such window designs not only reflect the architects' relationship with nature, but also embody their very philosophy regarding human life. This paper focuses on the role of windows in daily life and clarifies their differences and commonalities. By exploring Saarinen and Aalto's residential architecture in relation to Finnish history, alongside textual accounts of life in their eras and theoretical debates on windows, this paper analyzes the aesthetics of windows in daily life. The paper concludes that the aesthetics of windows in modern Finnish architecture represent a response to the question of how humans can coexist with nature within Finland's harsh natural environment.
