This paper proposes an integrated framework for reading sacred space within its surrounding community, using Wat Suan Dok, a royal Buddhist temple on the edge of the old moated settlement of Wiang Suan Dok in Chiang Mai, Thailand, as a case study. Existing studies of Lanna temples document architectural and historical significance but rarely address how sacredness is experienced differently by monks, residents, students, and visitors who share temple space today. Drawing on Victor Turner's theory of sacred space and sense-of-place literature, the paper develops a five-dimensional framework spanning religious, historical, architectural, experiential, and event-based aspects of sacredness. Historical and documentary analysis of Wat Suan Dok illustrates the framework, tracing sacredness through dynastic memory, thresholds inherited from the former moated city, and the temple's role as a living community centre. The paper argues that sacred space and community space are better understood as overlapping rather than opposed, and outlines a planned field methodology of interviews and mental mapping to test the framework against user perceptions. This conceptual contribution offers a transferable approach for reading sacredness in living religious sites, with implications for sustaining spiritual meaning alongside community life in Lanna temple contexts.
