Recently, the pervasive use of multimedia platforms for communicating artistic and aesthetic content has gained great attention in various organizations, ranging from national museums to private art galleries. Particularly, social media have become popular for these organizations to foster audience engagement effectively. In order to understand the effectiveness of social media in communicating arts and aesthetics, this study bases on theoretical perspectives of audience engagement and aesthetics as information processing, proposing an “engagement-benefit-response” model depicting that users may start with active or passive engagement with artistic/aesthetic information on social media to obtain functional or emotional benefits, which in turn to increase their psychological well-being and offline participation in arts and aesthetics activities. Meanwhile, this study regards social media intensity as a moderator influencing these positive relationships. A representative sample of 1444 social media users is collected via a nation-wide survey in Taiwan to test the proposed model. Our results show that both passive and active engagement affect functional and emotional benefits positively. These benefits are positively related to psychological well-being and offline participation. The moderating role of social media intensity is also confirmed by the data. According to our empirical evidence, this study is the first to extend and integrate the tenets of the aesthetics theory with user engagement and well-being literature for a thorough investigation to fill the research gap. Our findings also contributes greatly to digital communication strategies for arts and aesthetics on social media.
