The rapid adoption of generative artificial intelligence (AI) has fundamentally reshaped the digital information ecosystem, creating unprecedented opportunities for communication while increasing the scale and sophistication of misinformation, disinformation, synthetic media, and deepfakes. These developments have challenged traditional approaches to media literacy by requiring individuals not only to evaluate information critically but also to understand how AI systems generate, recommend, and amplify content. This paper examines the evolving role of media literacy education in promoting critical thinking and responsible media engagement in the age of generative AI. Using a qualitative documentary analysis, the study synthesizes recent scholarship and international policy developments on media literacy, AI literacy, digital citizenship, and information verification. The review indicates a growing scholarly consensus that media literacy alone is no longer sufficient to prepare learners for AI-mediated information environments. Emerging research and international educational frameworks advocate integrating AI literacy, algorithm awareness, source verification, ethical AI use, and digital resilience into media literacy curricula to strengthen learners' ability to critically evaluate AI-generated content and participate responsibly in digital spaces. Recent initiatives by UNESCO and the OECD further highlight the importance of equipping students with competencies that combine critical reasoning, ethical decision-making, and responsible use of AI technologies in education and society. The paper argues that reimagining media literacy through the integration of AI literacy offers a more comprehensive framework for developing informed, resilient, and ethically responsible digital citizens in increasingly AI-driven information environments.
