Generative AI is reshaping graduate industrial design education by accelerating ideation, visualization, documentation, and speculative communication. This paper examines how AI-assisted workflows alter creative mediation, pedagogical judgment, and the relation between digital representation and material resolution within interdisciplinary studio practice in Mexico. Drawing on longitudinal reflective pedagogical observation across multiple semesters in graduate industrial design programs at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the study analyzes recurring patterns in student projects that integrated conversational AI, generative image systems, digital fabrication, and speculative visualization. Rather than treating these tools as autonomous creative agents, the paper approaches them as mediating environments that expand the production of alternatives while displacing key moments of evaluation, selection, and technical grounding. The analysis identifies a productive but unstable tension. Students use generative systems to overcome creative blocks, construct persuasive visual narratives, and accelerate iterative exploration; however, these workflows often widen the gap between speculative digital aesthetics and situated design judgment, particularly regarding manufacturing feasibility, ergonomics, contextual appropriateness, and material understanding. From a Latin American perspective, the paper argues that this tension is especially significant where advanced computational tools coexist with hybrid, artisanal, and materially constrained production cultures. The contribution is therefore a critical reflection on post-digital design education: how educators increasingly act as mediators of judgment, feasibility, and cultural meaning within environments of algorithmic abundance.
