Developing Intercultural Communication Skills Through Video Materials: An Analysis of a Workshop for Japanese Corporate Employees Facing Growing Cultural Diversity (111536)

This study examines a workshop aimed at developing intercultural communication skills and evaluates the effectiveness of video materials that focus on nonverbal communication styles across cultures. A critical component of intercultural competence is the ability to decode nonverbal expressions within their proper cultural contexts. While nonverbal communication plays a significant role in reinforcing verbal content, it can also independently shape and interpret the context of messages. In fact, communication research indicates that 60 to 90 percent of human interaction is mediated through nonverbal channels. Consequently, accurately decoding nonverbal expressions is crucial; misinterpretations often lead to misunderstandings, as nonverbal communication is deeply embedded in cultural contexts, values, and expectations. To enhance understanding and awareness, we are developing a pedagogical model utilizing video materials focused on cross-cultural nonverbal expressions. Although these materials were originally developed for higher education students, a workshop was conducted for 37 corporate employees in Japan. Following the workshop, a questionnaire was distributed to collect feedback, resulting in 15 responses. The findings showed that 86.7% of respondents found the video materials easy to understand, and 93.3% reported an improved understanding of cultural differences in nonverbal communication. Overall, the results indicate that the video-based workshop was effective in raising awareness of nonverbal cues. They also highlight a growing demand for such training among companies with increasingly diverse workforces. This presentation outlines the workshop content and provides a detailed analysis of the questionnaire results.
