This study examines how generative artificial intelligence transforms creative learning in visual communication classrooms through a focused investigation of student-produced comics in India. The research analyses how undergraduate students utilise tools such as text-to-image generators, prompt-based image editors, and adaptive layout software to construct narrative comics across multiple genres. It further investigates how these tools reshape artistic practice, influence emerging forms of visual literacy, and redefine expectations surrounding effort, skill development, and authorship. The study follows a cohort of thirty-four media arts students in a metropolitan private university in southern India. Participants produced short comics spanning speculative fiction, romance, slice of life, superhero, fantasy, and social commentary. Using structured observations, guided studio modules, and reflective logs, the research documents workflows involving concept creation, character design, sequential panel development, and digital publication. Findings reveal accelerated ideation through rapid visualisation and iterative experimentation with tone, lighting, and cultural motifs. However, challenges persist in maintaining visual consistency across panels, particularly in character identity and perspective. Prompt refinement emerged as a critical creative skill comparable to traditional drafting. Three pedagogical implications arise: prompt literacy as core competence, evolving debates on authorship and ethics, and the need for hybrid teaching models integrating manual and AI-assisted methods. The study concludes that generative artificial intelligence expands expressive potential while necessitating critical engagement with craft, originality, and narrative responsibility in contemporary comics education. These findings highlight the importance of balanced pedagogies that cultivate both technical adaptability and critical awareness among emerging visual storytellers in digitally mediated creative environments.
