Exploring Podcast-Based Narrative Learning for International Students’ Sociocultural Adaptation (108995)

This study examines the effects of podcast-based narrative learning on the sociocultural adaptation of international students in higher education. International students often face challenges related to language barriers, cultural differences, and social adjustment when entering a new cultural environment. Narrative-based learning activities may provide opportunities for students to reflect on and articulate their experiences, thereby facilitating cultural adaptation.
A mixed-methods research design was employed. A total of 20 first-year Filipino students participated in the study. During the course, students worked in small groups to produce four to six podcast episodes reflecting their early experiences of studying and living in Taiwan. Quantitative data were collected using the Sociocultural Adaptation Scale (SCAS; Ward & Kennedy, 1999), administered before and after the course intervention. Paired-sample t-tests were conducted to examine changes in students’ sociocultural adaptation levels. Qualitative data were obtained through podcast content analysis, reflective journals, and semi-structured interviews.
The results revealed a significant increase in students’ mean scores on the sociocultural adaptation scale following the course intervention (p < .05), suggesting that podcast-based narrative activities positively contributed to international students’ cultural adaptation. These findings highlight the potential of integrating narrative media production into higher education curricula to support international students’ cross-cultural learning and sociocultural adjustment.
