In modern South Africa, prevailing views on masculinity often influence how people interact with each other, usually leading to silence, emotional repression, and gender inequality. This presentation discusses Asixoxe ("Let's Talk"), a forum theatre project co-created by the researcher to address these issues through performance and public discussion. Set in a vibrant Shisanyama, a social gathering where meat is grilled (braai/barbecue). The play centres on Mandla, a young man caught between society's ideals of manhood and the career goals of his fiancée, Lulu. Through Mandla's interactions with Tshepo, a friend who represents toxic masculine ideals, the play highlights the emotional and relational toll of such harmful norms. Audience members are invited to become ‘spect-actors’, engaging directly with the performance by proposing alternative actions. This interactive approach promotes critical dialogue about how language and behaviour can either sustain or challenge gender-based violence. This builds on the live performance-based research project summarised above. Drawing on Augusto Boal’s (1979) concept of forum theatre, this research explores this form as both a theoretical and participatory tool. Moving on to part two of the research project, this study unpacks the audience’s responses, examining moments of resistance and insight related to gendered power dynamics and cultural expectations. It considers how forum theatre can be used as a tool for dialogue and transformation, with broader implications for gender and communication studies. Ultimately, Asixoxe aims to create an environment where communities can discuss freely, challenge harmful norms, and envision more inclusive and compassionate ways of living within SA.
